Poland and the Carpathian mountain region offer some of the most diverse and pristine fishing opportunities in Europe, especially for devoted fly anglers. The country’s rivers, winding through picturesque landscapes, are home to a rich variety of species, including trout, grayling, and the elusive Danube salmon.
Key regions for fly fishing include the Tatra mountains, where rivers like the Dunajec, Biały Dunajec, and Białka Tatrzańska offer fast-flowing waters, perfect for targeting brown trout and grayling. The rivers here are characterised by their crystal-clear waters, deep pools, and challenging currents, making them ideal for both novice and experienced anglers.
The fishing season typically runs from spring to autumn, and some rivers are regulated to protect local fish populations, ensuring sustainable fishing practices. Anglers can enjoy a variety of techniques, with Czech nymphing being particularly popular in the area.
Spring: Fishing begins when water temperatures reach 5-8°C, usually in April. Fish feed in shallower areas and bays. Bigger specimens are more active in the morning and evening. In May, streamers work in the mornings, while nymphs are ideal for day and evening fishing.
Summer: June sees caddis swarms, and water warms up, increasing fish activity. Nymphing, dry fly, and streamer fishing are all effective. Dry fly fishing is especially popular in the mornings and evenings. Summer is peak season for trout and grayling fishing.
Autumn: As the season changes, fish, especially salmon, target baitfish. Autumn is a prime time for grayling fishing and offers opportunities for salmon.
Winter: Coldwater temperatures boost oxygen levels, keeping fish active. Fly fishing for river salmon, with imitation caddis and streamers (fish or leech imitations), is popular.
January marks the start of protection periods for certain species.
Trout season: 01. February – 31. August.

The Białka Tatrzańska River is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful rivers in southern Poland. It begins at an altitude of 1,075 meters in the Tatra Mountains — a true gem for mountain view enthusiasts.
In its upper reaches, the Białka flows fast and wild, gradually softening its pace as the landscape descends. But make no mistake — it’s a river with a mind of its own, carving its own path through the terrain. That’s part of its magic. This landscape is entirely shaped by nature, untouched by human hands.
If you’re looking to discover the river’s most captivating spots, our guides can help lead the way. With its alpine character, swift currents, and stunning scenery, the Białka Tatrzańska never fails to surprise.
The Biały Dunajec is a beautiful mountain river that draws anglers from across Poland and beyond. Starting its flow from the slopes of the Lackowa mountain at about 750 meters above sea level.
In its upper stretch near Szaflary, the river has a true alpine character, with fast flows and small waterfalls. Further downstream, it slows and widens before merging with the Czarny Dunajec. This section is known for deep pools and excellent fishing spots.
Brown trout are common here, and grayling can also be found. The river is perfect for the short nymph technique, which requires skillful water reading and the right fly choice. Each year, anglers report impressive catches of grayling and trout, making Biały Dunajec a rewarding fly fishing destination.
The Czarny Dunajec River starts in the southern part of Poland, very close to the Slovakian border, in the Tatra Mountains. It flows about 48 km through the beautiful Podhale region, known for its stunning mountain views. It eventually meets the Biały Dunajec in the Nowy Targ Basin. From their confluence, the river continues simply as the Dunajec.
The river winds through picturesque valleys and meadows, with a varied depth — ranging from shallow riffles to pools as deep as three meters. Its width stretches from 3 to 15 meters, making it well-suited for fly fishing along almost its entire course (except for the buffer zone of the Tatra National Park).
In its upper reaches, the Czarny Dunajec has a fast mountain character, with gravel bars and strong currents. As it flows downstream, it transitions into a slower, lowland river with bends and tributaries — perfect conditions for targeting brown trout and grayling with a fly.
The Dunajec River Special Fishery was created especially for fly anglers. It is one of the best ‘no-kill‘ (catch & release) fisheries in Poland and throughout Europe. The only allowed method of fishing there is with an artificial barbless fly.
Fish present in the Dunajec River Special Fishery: Brown trout, Danube salmon (hucho hucho), grayling, chub, barbel, and common nase.
Nestled in the Dunajec River Valley, the lodge is a haven designed for true fly fishing devotees. This small, welcoming retreat offers comfortable, cozy rooms — most featuring private showers, WC, TV, and complimentary Wi-Fi — ensuring you have everything you need for a restful stay.
Your fishing adventure begins each morning with a hearty breakfast to fuel your day. Lunch is served right on the riverbank, allowing you to stay close to nature and maximise your time on the water. In the evening, if temperatures allow, you’re invited to enjoy dinner in the covered outdoor barbecue area, where delicious Polish cuisine is served. Relax, share stories, and relive the highlights of the day in a warm and friendly atmosphere.
Each evening, guests are also invited to join fly-tying sessions, where you can craft your own flies under the guidance of an experienced instructor. Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned tier, it’s a wonderful way to deepen your skills and connect with fellow anglers.
