Bumi Hills Safari Lodge, Lake Kariba

There is a secret Riviera in the heart of Africa. Bumi Hills Safari Lodge boasts one of Africa’s finest wilderness locations, perched on the remote hills overlooking the vastness of Lake Kariba. A paradise for fishing the African Tigerfish – arguably the most exciting freshwater game fish to be found in the inland waters of Africa.

Introduction

Overview of Lake Kariba in the northern region of Zimbabwe

Lake Kariba was created in the late 1950s by damming the Zambezi River and is now one of the largest man-made reservoirs in the world. Kariba is 220km long and 40km wide and lies on Zimbabwe’s northern border with Zambia. Before the project could begin, the Batonga people and their villages had to be relocated. Later, “Operation Noah”, a massive wildlife rescue project, was launched to relocate animals affected by the rising waters. More than 6,000 animals were moved to safety. Today Kariba is known for the abundance of wildlife thriving from this great expanse of water. It is also home to the voracious freshwater Tiger fish – the most ferocious looking fish in Africa.

Bumi Hills is situated near the North Eastern border of the Matusadona National Park. It’s a remote wilderness, yet easily accessible by light aircraft and boat, allowing you to be swiftly transported into this paradise without the stress of a long journey.

Not only is Kariba’s shoreline rich in wildlife but the lodge’s proximity to Matusadona allows for the animals to roam freely between the national park and the northern shorelines of the great lake.

This vast expanse of fresh water is home to some magnificent species of fish including the ferocious Tiger fish, Bream, (Tilapia), Catfish, Barbel, Labeo, Jack and the mighty Vundu which can grow to almost 2 metres in length. The tiger fish is responsible for the now world famous annual ‘Tiger Fish Tournament’.

With the comfort of the luxurious Bumi Hills Safari Lodge and our team of professional fly fishing guides, we are offering an exclusive fly fishing trip for a few weeks a year – just when the fishing is at it’s peak!

It’s an amazing safari area with other activities, including game viewing, guided walking safaris, day and night game drives searching for lions in particular.

Aboard the “Lady Jacqueline” you cruise the waters of Lake Kariba observing wildlife on a safari experience unlike any other.

Bring your family along on your fishing trip and let them experience the wonders of the African wilderness! There is so much for them to do while you are out fishing, and then you can all unwind together in the evenings by the infinity pool, taking in the beautiful views of the vast African wilderness and the awe-inspiring starry sky.

Fishing

Fly Fishing on Lake Kariba

TAKING FLY FISHING FOR TIGER TO A WHOLE NEW LEVEL

Kariba’s vastness gives the impression of an endless ocean, while closer to shore, tree stumps pierce the lake’s surface, evidence of land claimed by water. These iconic dead woods offer good hiding for bream and attract the voracious Tiger fish. The aquatic ecosystem is rich in baitfish and the combination of these factors has resulted in the Tiger fish reaching unprecedented sizes.

Tiger fishing is the ultimate challenge for many anglers. Known for their speed, strength and aggressive behaviour, Tiger fish push even the most experienced anglers to their limits. Fly fishing adds a whole new exciting challenge to the wish list of fly fishing enthusiasts. With our combination of the finest safari camps, remote wilderness, pristine waters and the knowledge of our expert fly fishing guides, we are upscaling fly fishing for Tiger.

Fishing takes place in the cool hours of the morning and the soothing shadows of the setting sun. During your time out on the lake, you will encounter many other species: Elephant, Crocodile, Hippopotamus. Buffalo and  antelope herds graze on the lush gras seeming the shoreline. During each fishing session your guide will pack plenty of cold drinks and snacks. As the sun goes down, enjoy a gin and tonic while witnessing in the iconic graveyard scene of the dead trees against a deep red sky.

FLY FISHING RECOMMENDATIONS
We suggest using a #8 or #9 rod with a faster action. Combine it with a fast-sinking shooting-head or sink-tip line to optimize your casting experience. As for the tippet, a short, non-tapered section of 15lb or 20lb mono or fluorocarbon line works best. To connect your fly to the tippet, an 8-inch piano wire trace is recommended. In the Lower Zambezi, successful fly patterns are typically heavily dressed clousers or deceiver-type flies ranging from size #1-0 to #5-0.

Optimal color combinations include white and blue, white and silver, and black variations like black and red or black.

Most of the fishing requires you to strip your fly to provoke a violent strike. There are also times where fish will take in response to the swing of the fly. Tiger have been seen to jump out of the water and take a hovering bird. As these creatures are voracious it worth trying all kinds of lures. Use shooting heads, as they allow a greater maximum effective casting distance with each cast. Although it’s nice to be able to use a double handed rod when there is wind, but fishing can also be done with a single handed rod and the choice is yours. We like to recommend float or clear intermediate shooting heads.

FISH SPECIES
The Hydrocynus vittatus Tiger Fish is the second largest Tiger species and can grow to up to 33+ pounds. It is common in the southernmost areas of the African continent and is common in areas around the Okavango Delta and the Zambezi River system. The Tiger is a predatory freshwater fish and is generally a piscivore but it has been observed leaping out of the water and catching swallows in flight!
Considered by anglers to be a cunning and ferocious creature, Tiger fish are arguably the most exciting freshwater game fish to be found in the inland waters of Africa. Picking a fight with some of these remarkable creatures, using mainly floating and intermediate lines, makes for spectacular show downs and visual battles. Watching a 20lb Tiger attack your fly and take to the air can be downright spine-chilling, yet highly exhilarating and guaranteed to get your adrenaline pumping.

The Zambezi Bream (Pharyngochromis) is a genus of cichlids native to Southern Africa. There are two species, which reach up to 12 and 22 cm in length. Many other species like Chessa, Nkupe, Vundu and Tilapia, opt for a softer rod.

BEST SEASONS
October and November, during the heat of the year, are the prime months for targeting Tiger, when they are more active and more aggressive before the main breeding season.

However fishing on Lake Kariba is usually good all year round. Especially Tiger can be targeted any time – they appear to be always voracious and keen to take a colourful fly.
