"Nordkapp" Norway

Soak up the magic of the midnight sun at the northern tip of Norway! Whether you’re chasing the majestic Atlantic salmon or the thriving sea trout, you’ll be in for an unforgettable experience.

Introduction

Overview - Fishing in the Land of the Midnight Sun

At the tip of Norway, where the midnight sun paints the rivers in a golden light, Atlantic salmon enter the river systems during the summer weeks.

The Reisa river is one of the most beautiful salmon rivers imaginable, with enchanting pools that look like they’ve been hand-crafted for fly fishing. The river begins its incredible journey in Lake Raisjavri, meandering for 75 miles through the scenic Reisa National Park and its breathtaking valley of pristine waterfalls. It then winds its way to the charming town of Storslett, where it joins the equally awe-inspiring Reisa Fjord.

But there are other smaller rivers that we like to keep “secret”, they are different but equally spectacular and perfect for fly fishing enthusiasts seeking to catch a majestic Atlantic salmon.

However this magical place also allows you to reconnect with nature and feel in tune with yourself. It offers wellness for the soul.

Fly Fishing on the Northern Tip of Norway

Getting an Atlantic salmon to take your fly is no small challenge. So when a salmon takes your fly it is incredibly exciting and to land such a magnificent creature is incredibly fulfilling. It’s these addictive emotions that brings anglers back to these rivers year for year.

While Atlantic salmon is the favoured trophy, sea trout fishing is also highly rewarding. We often like to offer both options and will adapt depending on the weather conditions and your wishes.

One of the newest additions to saltwater fly fishing is targeting the mighty halibut. If catching big, powerful fish is your thing, then our Norwegian saltwater adventures are for you! Imagine fishing in shallow, clear water and knowing that with every cast you have the chance to hook fish weighing over 100 pounds.

Fish Species:

  • Atlantic Salmon: The star attraction the Nordkapp region. Our guides have been fortunate enough to experience some unforgettable catches and losses of colossal salmon. These catches include several fish in the upper 30 pound range and even some in the upper 40 pound range. Furthermore this river has the ability to produce fish in excess of 50 pounds – which is quite staggering.
  • Sea Trout: While the salmon is the main draw, sea trout  also populate estuaries, adding to the diversity and excitement of the fishing experience. They average 4 – 5 lbs, yet you will catch specimens between 7 – 9 lbs, some even over 10 lbs!
  • Halibut: The first thing that surprises most people is how visual it is, drifting over the shallow grounds and watching groups of cod searching for their next meal is exciting enough, but to spot a giant Halibut cruising past really raises the adrenaline. It would be fair to say that 50% of all the takes by halibut, both lure and fly, are witnessed from the boat as they follow their chosen prey up to the surface.

Seasons:

  • 01. July to 31. August: Season for Atlantic Salmon.
  • June to the end of July: Best season for sea trout.
  • All summer until the end of August: Best time for Halibut on the fly.

At high tide we usually target salmon in the rivers and when the tide drops it’s perfect for sea trout. Wading into the surf and also boating offer great opportunities for sea trout. Flexibility is the key to a successful and enjoyable fishing trip.

The Accommodation

Spoilt for Choice
Charming Hotel or Cozy Cabin

Reisa Lodge
Far beyond the Arctic Circle, between steep mountains, deep fjords and the endless “Finnmarksvidda”, hidden in the upper part of the wild Reisa Valley, close to the Reisa National Park. In short, far from the hustle and bustle of the modern world. The charming Reisa Lodge is ideally situated and offers all the comforts of a modern guest hotel. The restaurant focuses its cuisine on the finest local ingredients to create a range of delicious dishes. The “Bivrost” bar, as the Vikings called the northern lights, offers local gin, vodka, aquavit and the unique and locally produced Bivrost whisky. The Jacuzzi on the open-air roof terrace overlooks the Reisa River and the surrounding mountains.

Reisafjord Hotel
The tourist hotel is located in the small town of Sørkjosen, opposite the quaint harbour. The hotel has 54 comfortable rooms, each with shower/WC and all modern conveniences. It’s location in the small town makes it an attractive base for accessing the best salmon rivers and the coast nearby.

The Cabin
A cosy cabin ideal for two fishermen who like to cook for themselves. The cabin has 2 bedrooms, a small lounge and a small but well equipped kitchen. The proximity to the small town of Sørkjosen is ideal. But perhaps the best thing about this accommodation is the fabulous view over the Reisa fjord and the surrounding mountains!

Professional Guides

Guides, Gear and Good News!

A professional guide is a must! Even if you are a seasoned salmon angler with years of experience behind you, having the help of one of our guides to net some of the monster fish you will hook on these rivers will turn the near impossible into a realistic chance. The guides also use traditional Reisa river boats. With their slim profile, they are perfect for taking you to many parts of the river that are not accessible by other means and can also be used to fish from and follow running fish in times of high water.

Guides recommendations – what to bring!
The Reisa is a medium sized salmon river that would be described as a relatively technical river to fish. An angler’s ability to cast and control the line makes a big difference on a river like this, as does the ability to play big, powerful fish once they are hooked. For these reasons we recommend that you bring the right equipment to deal with these situations, rods should be 9wt and 10wt fourteen and fifteen foot double handed. Reels should have a large line capacity, capable of holding 400m of 30lb gel spun backing.

The truth about Atlantic salmon.
The river’s ability to produce such gigantic salmon has not come without a cost. Over the years, poaching, netting at sea and the dreaded fish farms have all taken their toll. Sadly, this is the case with every salmon river in the world. To support their survival, the Reisa River is currently closed to fishing until 2026 or possibly 2027. Recent legislation has brought ‘light to the end of the tunnel’… netting at sea has recently been banned in a large area affecting the Reisa. We expect this legislation to have an immediate positive effect on salmon numbers as many more tonnes of fish will be allowed to enter these beautiful rivers!

The good news is, despite the declining numbers, we are pleased that our expert guides have still managed to send many visiting anglers home with great memories of their best salmon catch ever!
