Fishing at St Brandon's Atoll, Mauritius

St Brandon’s Atoll, located in a remote spot in the Indian Ocean, is a world-class destination for fly fishing enthusiasts. The atoll’s pristine waters and diverse marine life provide an unparalleled fishing experience, attracting fishing adventurers from around the world.

Fish Species:

  • Bonefish: St Brandon is renowned for its thrilling Bonefishing. These sleek and slender creatures can accelerate and reach top speed in an instant. It’s like hunting, slowly stalking them either on foot or from the deck of a skiff to get within casting range. Average weights are between 2-3kg, but you will have the opportunity to land fish around 4-5kg and we have measured some up to 87cm, weighing 6.5kg!
  • Indo-Pacific Permit: These elusive fish are a coveted target for fly fishermen. The large numbers of Permit at St Brandon’s provide excellent opportunities to catch these spooky fish on the flats. We target them exclusively on foot, providing a thrilling walk and stalk experience. Daily opportunities range from 2-7kg. However, we have landed fish over 9kg!
  • Giant Trevally (GT): Known for their incredible strength and aggressive strikes, Giant Trevally are a prized catch, although you won’t get a shot every day, but when you do they are usually real monsters. Most are over 1 m and we have landed some over 1.30 m. GTs are found on the flats and since they are strong swimmers, they are also prevalent around the coral edges and drop-offs of the atoll.
  • Bluefin Trevally: Smaller but equally aggressive, Bluefin Trevally are commonly found in the flats. We frequently land fish between 6-9 kg.
  • Others: Other notable fish species one can encounter on the flats include Golden, Yellow Dot and Green Spot Trevally.
