Introduction

Goodnews River

Experience unparalleled fishing on the Goodnews River, where world-class angling meets the serene and untouched beauty of Alaska. Revel in the solitude and tranquility of the river, away from the crowds, where it’s just you and the fish, creating memories in nature’s most pristine setting.

Situated in southwest Alaska, the Goodnews River originates from the Ahklun Mountains and flows into the Bering Sea. This 3-branch wilderness river system offers nearly 800 km of fishable streams, braids and creeks. With no commercial fishing since 2015, the river is alive with fish, healthy runs of all 5 Pacific salmon, sea-run Dolly Vardon, Arctic Grayling and resident Leopard Rainbow Trout. The lodge is the only fully serviced lodge on the system, offering excellent guiding and high speed jet boats (2 guests per guide/boat). This is not a fly out lodge, access to the river is on your doorstep!

The upper half of the river lies within the designated wilderness of the Togiak National Wildlife Refuge, surrounded by green tundra-covered mountains. It features a good current in the upper reaches, with little to no current near its mouth at Goodnews Bay. In fact, tidal influences can reverse the current at its mouth, where these tidal waters are also fished.

Fishing

Fishing on the Goodnews River

The Goodnews River is a haven for anglers, offering some of the best fishing experiences in Alaska. This pristine river is renowned for its abundant fish species and picturesque surroundings, making it a prime destination for both novice and seasoned fishermen.

Fish Species:

  • King Salmon (Chinook): The largest of the salmon species, King Salmon are abundant in the Goodnews River from mid-June to late July. Their sheer size and strength provide a thrilling challenge for anglers. They usually weigh around 10-12kg. However, you can often land specimens weighing well over 20kg! You can expect 10+ hook-ups per day.
  • Silver Salmon (Coho): Known for their acrobatic fights, Silver Salmon run from late July through September. These chrome bright salmon are prized for their aggressive strikes and are a favourite among fly fishermen.
  • Sockeye Salmon (Red): Arriving in mid-June, Sockeye Salmon are present until early August. These salmon are known for their bright red color and excellent table fare. Over the last 3 years we have seen a significant increase in numbers. We often target these Reds just a few miles up from the river mouth (in salty water).
  • Chum Salmon (Dog/Keta): Available from mid-June to early August, Chum Salmon offer strong fights and are plentiful in the river. A lot of fun!
  • Pink Salmon (Humpy): These salmon run on even years and are available from mid-July to late August. Though smaller, they provide plenty of action and are great fun to catch.
  • Rainbow Trout: Available year-round, Rainbow Trout are especially active from June through September. Their vibrant colors and fighting spirit make them a sought-after catch.
  • Arctic Grayling: These fish are abundant and can be caught throughout the summer months. The Goodnews River is home to a large population of grayling and throughout the season guests can hook fish over 50cm.
  • Best Seasons:
  • Spring (June): The river comes alive with the arrival of King and Sockeye Salmon. This is also a great time for Rainbow Trout and Arctic Grayling.
  • Summer (July to August): Prime time for fishing, with all five species of Pacific Salmon available, particularly Silver and Pink Salmon. Rainbow Trout and Grayling are also highly active.
  • Fall (September): As the season winds down, Silver Salmon continue to run strong, and Rainbow Trout and Arctic Grayling provide excellent fishing opportunities.

The Goodnews River offers a fishing experience like no other, with its diverse fish populations and stunning natural beauty. Whether you’re chasing the mighty King, the aggressive Silver or the elusive Leopard Rainbow, the river promises unforgettable adventures and bountiful catches.
