Tackle & Tactics

The Secret to Success Lies in the Preparation

Fly fishing can be done from both a boat and by wading, depending on the tide and location. When fishing from a boat, we typically drift across lagoons or target the outer reef sections. During the right tide, we wade through shallow sandbanks, reefs, or along the edges of small islands and sandbanks.

To successfully fly fish for Giant Trevally, you’ll need an 11 or 12 weight, 9-foot, single-hand fly rod equipped with a high-quality saltwater reel, loaded with a tropical GT line, and at least 300 yards of backing.

Proper wading boots are essential! When wading, anglers primarily targeting GT will carry an 11 or 12 weight rod and have a secondary 8 or 9 weight rod attached to their backpack for quick access. The lighter backup rod is usually set up for permit or triggerfish.

For success you need to be quick to adjust your technique and your tackle.

For spin fishing in these waters, robust equipment is necessary to handle the powerful Giant Trevallies, Napoleon Wrasse, and other agressive species. Ensure you bring rods and reels specifically designed for this type of tropical salt water fishing!
