Flowing through the heart of untamed Alaska, the Alagnak River is a ribbon of wilderness woven with breathtaking beauty, rich wildlife, and timeless cultural heritage. Whether you’re here to fish, explore, or simply be moved by the wild, the Alagnak offers an unforgettable adventure with every bend.
If fly fishing had a sacred home, Alaska would be its holy ground.
Here, fly fishing isn’t just a pastime — it’s a way of life. Once the magic of casting in wild waters catches you, there’s no turning back.
As you journey down its braided waters, you might glimpse a bald eagle silhouetted against the sky, perched high in a spruce tree. A moose may quietly emerge from the misty tundra, while a brown bear feasts on salmon in the shallows — nature’s raw drama unfolding before your eyes.
The Alagnak River flows from the Katmai National Forest into Bristol Bay. Famous for some of the best fishing, wildlife photography and bear watching in the world.
To preserve its wild beauty, rich wildlife, and deep cultural roots, the upper 67 miles of the Alagnak River were designated a Wild River in 1980 under the National Wild and Scenic Rivers Act.
Part of Alaska’s Wild and Scenic Rivers System, the Alagnak has sustained life for over 8,000 years. Alaska Natives still live along its banks, practising traditional subsistence lifestyles.
As you explore its waters, take a moment to honour the generations who came before — and the living heritage that continues today.
The Alaska Trophy Adventures Lodge (ATA) sits on the legendary Alagnak River, where the wild waters flow from Katmai National Park into Bristol Bay.
This iconic stretch — known as the Upper Braids — is a maze of dynamic channels teeming with life. Just six miles upstream, the Kukaklek and Nonvianuk Rivers merge to form the mighty Alagnak.
Thanks to the prime location and a full fleet of jet boats, you have access to the entire watershed — unlocking endless opportunities for fishing, wildlife viewing, and adventure.
Fish Species:
Fly anglers have a rare privilege: the chance to explore some of the most remote, pristine, and breathtaking places on Earth — rod in hand, soul wide open.
The ATA team focuses on comfort, family values, and genuine hospitality. They make you feel like part of the family!
The Lodge is a true family-run operation, owned by father and son team Wayne and Jacob McGee, and held together by the heart and dedication of their wives, Sue and Ashley, along with Cameron McGee, who manages the camp.
The kitchen team love creating delicious, beautifully presented meals. Breakfast and dinner are served in the main lodge, where guests and guides come together to relax and share stories after a full day on the water.
Most days, lunch is packed and enjoyed stream-side. But during peak salmon season, your guide may prepare your freshly caught salmon over an open fire — a true Alaskan experience!
Sue and Ashley McGee lead the amazing team behind the scenes, adding care, warmth, and attention to detail. Let them know if you have any special requests — they go the extra mile to make your stay truly unforgettable.

Bear Viewing in Katmai National Park
Home to the world’s highest concentration of brown bears, Katmai National Park is one of Alaska’s premier destinations for unforgettable wildlife encounters — especially during the salmon run, when massive brown bears gather to feed.
With over 25 years of experience in Alaska and a spotless safety record, the expert guides have developed a deep understanding and respect for these incredible animals — built through years of living and working among them.
The lodge is located right in the heart of bear country, where it’s not uncommon to spot bears right from your cabin deck. Using a fleet of jet boats, the guides can take you deep into prime bear territory, helping photographers, filmmakers, and nature lovers get up close (safely!) to these majestic creatures.
At the peak of the season, it’s not unusual to see 20 or more bears in a single day, along with an impressive variety of other Alaskan wildlife, such as moose, bald eagles, beavers, and foxes.
The region also supports healthy populations of wolverine, porcupine, river otter, caribou, wolves, waterfowl and migratory birds.
We can also arrange a fly-out safari to see walrus, sea otters, seals, beluga and orca whales.
